"moderate Islam"

Reader comment on item: Recruiting Soldiers Against Radical Islam

Submitted by DAVID R. GROESBECK (United States), Apr 3, 2007 at 04:05

I admire Dr. Pipes greatly, but I wonder if hopes of creating a "moderate Islam" aren't overly optimistic. Islam in any of it's iterations is based on jihadist conquest of all lands & people deemed Dar al Harb. That's a central tenet of this religion & it hasn't changed since it's inception 1400 years ago. It seems to me that the only chance the west has of dealing with this scourge of hate & domination is to attract it's practitioners with a more humane & desireable way of life-secular democracy.

As an atheist,I have no use for any religion, but at least Christianity has been defanged & housebroken to the point where I can live with it-annoying though it may be. Islam I can't. Any person or "ism" that wants what I've got becomes my enemy. By defining "moderate Islam" as that which has renounced Jihad, havn't we in effect, defined Islam out of existence?

Respectfully, David R. Groesbeck
