Dr Pipes,

For any of the readers interested in reading about "the authors of the Qur'an" as per the Islamic Historical Tradition, I suggest reading the English translation of Claude Gilliot's article: "On the Origin of the Informants of the Prophet" and it is available in Gerd Puin and Karl Heinz Ohlig's "The Hidden Origins of Islam" It is available at amazon.com

The authors of Quran mentions the "informants" in Q16:103 where it says:

"we know as well that people say that a person is teaching him. the tongue of that person whom they are talking about is foreign, but it is a pure Arabic tongue."

Gilliot provides many names of "informants" from the Islamic historical tradition. This could very well be a case where the Qur'an provides the reader with a very opaque verse and the end result is that al-Mufasereen had to make things up and none of this is real.
