Bush reaction to Hamas victory - does the shoe fit?

Reader comment on item: [The Hamas electoral victory:] Democracy's bitter fruit

Submitted by Gunther Steinberg (United States), Jan 29, 2006 at 12:55

The Bush comments on why Hamas won in Palestinian elections were likely correct:
- the people will not stand for corrupt government, they want honest government.
- they did not want the leaders to enrich themselves with the money provided by outside world.
- they want the health and social services that Hamas has provided.

"Mr. President, read what you say and consider that the shoe fits."
The same fits the US situation today:
- the majority does not want a corrupt Congress which accepts bribes from lobbyists.
- Nor a governing party is intent to cut back or eliminate most or all "unearned" social and health care services, as first enunciated by Gingrich in his "Contract for America", and by DeLay's K-street plan to make his party domination permanent through garnering the bulk of the lobbying money.
- Nor a party that makes cuts decreasing badly needed educated population by reducing student aid.
- Nor a government that is fiscally irresponsible, encourages spending to maintain the economy, which discourages savings, and has left too many people as indebted as the current administration.

Will the US electorate mimic the Palestinians vote for Hamas for precisely the same reasons?
We do not want the best Congress that money can buy!
- November 2006 is just ahead.
