Hitler's "Election"Reader comment on item: [The Hamas electoral victory:] Democracy's bitter fruit Submitted by P John Weir (Australia), Jan 28, 2006 at 01:44 Dear Dr. Pipes,Hitler was not elected by the German people in 1933. He was chosen as Chancellor by President von Hindenburg. Hitler received about 37% of the popular vote in the November 1932 elections and he assured the President that he could form a coalition with some right-wing parties. He rapidly out-manoeuvered his coalition partners, and after the Reichstag fire ruled by emergency decree. The rest, as they say, is history.
