Conclusion correct; analysis dubious

Reader comment on item: [The Hamas Electoral Victory:] Democracy's Bitter Fruit

Submitted by Melvin A. Fechter (United States), Jan 27, 2006 at 23:42

Your conclusion -- "The Hamas-led Palestinian Authority must be isolated and rejected at every turn" -- is correct, but your analysis seems dubious. Yes, the Palestinians have democratically elected an Islamo-fascist, terrorist government, but in so doing they have only once again defined themselves -- not, however, as lovers of freedom and democracy but, in the larger part, as fanatics and murderers.

The civilized world will reject them as your conclusion suggests, but it will not do so all at once, just as it has not for the last 59 years, and they will continue to fall ever more deeply into the pits of their misery. But they will not have a state, a truly sovereign state in any reasonable meaning of the words, until and unless they realize Israel is there to stay and the last significant element of their terrorists has ceased to exist. While Israel since 1948 has achieved great heights for so small a nation, by demanding it all the Palestinians have achieved nothing at all; on the contrary, they have risked and continue to risk losing it all..
