we are all missing the point

Reader comment on item: [The Hamas electoral victory:] Democracy's bitter fruit

Submitted by Guy (United States), Jan 28, 2006 at 03:18

I think we all tend to miss the central point here.

Hamas' success in the palestinian elections is a reflection of moral standards and norms of behaviour in Palestinian society.

The election was fair, and the results are valid and truthfull- they reflect the moral values of Arab societies.
The result of these moral standards is painfully clear - the atrrocities of 9/11, Madrid, London, Iraq (Lockerbie, Argentina, Munich, Hama, etc..)

When will we finally feel comgfortable acknowledging that the basic problem with the Muslim world is not their Religion or their interpretation of it - It's in their norms of behaviour and moral value systems.

Advancing democracy in the Arab world will not prevent muslim violence -i.e intentional mass murder of civilains in ither societies. It will only establish a democratic system of governance.

Moral Values are taught at home. Terrorism is not a cosequence of faulty governance - It's a consequence of a different view of what is right and wrong!!

We are wasting money and lives in Iraq. Instead of investing hundreds of billions of dollars trying to create a democracy in Iraq - we should invest in research that will allow us to leave the oil based economy. We need to drain the middle east of its' strategic importance - not try to change the values of its' peoples.
