Remeber Weimar

Reader comment on item: [The Hamas Electoral Victory:] Democracy's Bitter Fruit

Submitted by Frank Adam (United States), Jan 27, 2006 at 12:26

Too many people still regard History as bunk because you can not use it for a simple up front money making transaction; but it you ignore it, you relive it.

After 1918 everybody thought the reconstruction of the Central Powers as republics - the great liberal goal of the 19th century - would guarantee peace, social and international. It did not because the Germans did not see that they had been indisputeably beaten and the second string: Austria Hungary etc thought they had been hard done by.

After 1945 it was different because the Bombing Campaign and the occupation had made it clear to all in Germany and Japan that they had been beaten. This is the political justification for the bombing campaign and the A-bombs even though there is still an amount of argument as to whether the bombing effort was the best use of resources.

The Arabs are in their Weimar period. Too many of them do like the West's ideas despite enjoying the weaponry and much else. They do not yet see they have to conform to democracy for real because as the Iranian premier has just said," You need us more than we need you." Like the Hitler regime - also democratically elected thay will all find out that democracy is a means of growing up and taking reponsibility for stupid decisions - like th Arab disregard of teh UN decisio that Palestine needs a two state solution.
