Dear Lisa

with your Arabic background, you are well placed to comment first hand on the true meaning of the arabic used to say "and if that fails, smack them" in Surah 4:34

I've done some research myself simply using the net, and it seems to me that the word does in fact mean much more than a light pat. In context it seems also that it must be more serious, because it is a 'last resort' where other means have been tried and found to be inneffective.
