Madeleine, you are 100% right when you said that there is no way for democratic modern non-muslim society to really measure the proper amount of fear or doubts against Islam and Muslim in general. As a wise man said, "better be cautious rather than be sorry later."

Based on existing track-records, especially in places where Islam and Muslim are dominant forces, the non-Muslims or so-called infidels by Islamic term are specific folks to be humiliated, persecuted and decimated systematically. Just look at what happened to non-Muslims in Arab states, Pakistan, and Indonesia. I came to Australia two years ago and decided to stay permanently there mainly to avoid such religious persecution going on in my previous home country Indonesia. Alas, I still saw many violent crimes including gank-rapes against underage girls were also happened in Australia involving the so-called good Muslim perpetrators crying out-loud that they are just targeted by anti-Muslim discrimination. Such a non-sense.

Madeleine, you're right that there's no such thing as Islamophobia because smart people are just cautious and careful when dealing with such violent ideology and people like Islam and Muslims. Though Mr. Pipes repeatedly tries to remind us that there is the so-called moderate Islam and Muslims in this world, my experience tells me that those are exception rather than norm and therefore, a bit of cautioun and fear towards Islam and Muslims is not only normal; It is a smart thing to do, for me.
