Reader comment on item: Anti-Muslim Racism?

Submitted by Bill Storey (United States), Nov 22, 2005 at 20:12

The word has lost all meaning, and is now just an epithet. Once, it meant the belief by a member of one race that a member of another race was morally and intellectually inferior. Now, it's just a word the left uses to describe people it doesn't like. It's meaningless, and probably brings more negative opinion to the accuser than to the object of the accusation.

That said, it is just silly to say that there are no differences between the races. If that is true, why are 90% of the players in the NBA, and 70% of the players in the NFL black? Or why is the student population of UC Berkeley (my alma mater) almost half Asian?

Does the NBA have a racist policy that excludes whites? Of course not. Is Berkeley guity of racism? I do not think so.

The answer to all of this, of course, is to come to our senses and support policies that do not discriminate against anyone of any race in any aspect of life. Such a policy would eliminate both the old Jim Crow sort of discrimination, and the modern kind that we euphemistically call "affirmative action."

I do not expect to see such sensibility in my lifetime. We like our biases, myths, and prejudices far too much for that.
