Australian Racism

Reader comment on item: Anti-Muslim Racism?

Submitted by Robinoz (Australia), Dec 31, 2009 at 00:01

There is an interesting item about racism in Australia at Wake Up Australia!

It asserts, quite correctly, that the Australian Government is racist in that it has race-specific programs, policies and practices, but that most real Australians aren't.

Australia has a long history of immigration and has settled millions of people who have made worthwhile contributions to our society. Most of the trouble of late comes from refugees and muslims, the former because they come here traumatised, are domeciled in the same area and many are accustomed to criminal behaviour to survive, are generally poorly educated and cannot get work. The latter are only a problem when they don't accept our hospitality and want to change Australia to suit them rather than trying to integrate.

It's also true to say that some muslims and refugees, largely from African States, get a job and are making an effort to integrate into our society. Those are the people whom we want here and most of us will do all we can to help them settle and develop. We don't mind people practising whatever religion they wish, provided it doesn't interrupt our society or isn't illegal (for example, female genital mutilation is illegal in Australia as is having sexual relations with minors).
