Racism vs Cultural Prejudice

Reader comment on item: Anti-Muslim Racism?

Submitted by Darwin Barrett (United States), Nov 22, 2005 at 13:19

Most people, when pressed for details, object to cultural differences rather than race differences. Humans, in their limited ability to comunicate, will usually blame any perceived difference on race. Contrast Colin Powell, Tiger Woods, Bill Cosby, and Condi Rice with Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Snoop Dog, Most Rappers (any race), and practically anyone on BET or MTV. The differences are cultural, which one chooses, not race, which one doesn't. The people who claim racism are saying "You object to something that I was born with and have no control over", when actually most people object to the lifestyle someone has chosen. It is all about taking responsibility for your choices, something most people would prefer to avoid.
