Importance of Terminological Analysis

Reader comment on item: Anti-Muslim Racism?

Submitted by David Harris (Canada), Nov 22, 2005 at 14:14

Commentary of this type is one of our most important safeguards against the imposition of restrictive legislation. Because 'racism' has been elevated to the status that it has in the public arena -- without any clear notion of where it should apply -- then these shifts in usage can lead the way to its application to almost anything that PC radicals wish.

Hence, any statement about any distinct group that is not laudatory or showing sympathy will be presented as racist and subject to those legal sanctions originally introduced for benign, genuinely positive reasons. The relevance of the watch against these assaults on language cannot be overemphasized if genuinely free and open debate is to remain a central part of our Westwern political culture.
