Those who are quick to throw around the label of racism feel they can get away with it because no one has made the case to them that what they are doing is counterproductive.

So, this has the effect of taking them off the hook and then allowing them to claim some justification in the persistance of their view.

Such is the case of those who end up blindfolded; whether they were talked into it, or they came across it on their own.
