Commenter Lindermayer mistates American religious lifeReader comment on item: Europe vs. America Submitted by Gail Lammers (United States), Jan 16, 2003 at 11:39 Commenter Lindermayer either isn't an American or he has never set foot in an American Christian church. For example: he cites the Methodists as conservatives. A quick look at the website of the American United Methodist Church shows that it is firmly in the camp of the left. A strong faction within the U.M.C. supports gay ordination and is gaining ground. The church leaders have sponsored the most vigorous "outreach" to American Islam and are actually informing local church members to avoid assuming that their (Christ centered) beliefs are "correct" when conversing with Muslims.Much the same can be said for leading factions within the other "mainline" churches in America, which still represent a very large percentage of churchgoing American Christians. Perhaps to a secularist, every Christian is a "fundamentalist." Given this enormous factual error, one can only conclude that Mr. Lindermayer has only distorted some second hand information about American Christianity and his opinions and conclusions should carry little weight.
