CorporatacracyReader comment on item: Europe vs. America Submitted by Antonio Chaves (United States), Jan 16, 2003 at 18:10 Sanes' use of the term "corporate capitalism" to describe the U.S. system is much more accurate than the use of the term "individualistic liberalism." In the final analysis, the Republican "aversion" to government meddling in the market only refers to government programs that do not fund their constituents. America's biggest socialism program is its extensive network of freeways and interstate highways (brought to you mostly by the aggressive lobbying efforts of GM, Firestone, and Standard Oil.).This happened after GM bought up America's streetcar companies in the 1920's and 30's, only with the intention of ripping up their tracks. In effect, the "low cost" of driving in America has nothing to do with market forces and everything to do with corporate lobbying. As the sport utility vehicle becomes more popular than ever, most of our politicians would consider the promotion of energy conservation tantamount to political suicide (Thank you Exxon). Our addiction to driving has corrupted our foreign policy (Iran, Saudi Arabia), alienated us from the rest of the developed world (Kyoto Protocols), and subsidized our destruction (Saudi Arabia). The barbarians are at our gates, and most Americans are blissfully unaware that they are selling us the very rope with which they intend to hang us. Any real leaders out there?
