Fundamentalist aspects in Europe?

Reader comment on item: Europe vs. America

Submitted by Leo Brux (Germany), Jan 25, 2003 at 18:52

Germany, i.e., according to your words, has something liberal like America - but something fundamentalist, too - you call the super-system "bureaucratic leftism".

Germany is a liberal country that gives its citizens more freedom than the USA. I live in Munich - and can walk SAFELY everywhere, and I can reach every area of the city without using a car. Wonderful freedoms, both.

If I fail to earn enough money I will not lose my flat because the city will pay the flat rent - and that means freedom for me and all those who do not belong to the upper classes.

In elections I can choose among more than two agendas. And a candidate does not need big money and so does not depend on those who fund him or her - more freedom in politics.

But certainly the most important freedom we have compared with America is the one I mentioned first: the low crime rate which allows free movement everwhere at any time. And our "bureaucratic leftism" provides us - the majority of the people - with freedoms Americans can only dream of.

Moreover - listening to Mr. Bush we Europeans get the impression that there is a lot of fundamentalism in his agenda: In advancing his radical and religious division of good and evil, he seems to be fundamentalist - and so nearer to the Muslim fundamentalists than our European politicians.
