Contrast American conservatism with the European Right

Reader comment on item: Europe vs. America

Submitted by Arlinda DeAngelis (United States), Jan 17, 2003 at 15:11

Thank you, Dr. Pipes, for helping to shape the political debate of the Twenty-First Century. You are both scholar and teacher, and we are not only informed by your thoughtful analysis and incredible research and resources, but we are educated. Opening your e-mail is like going to a master's class in history and political science.

To add to the debate of the new emerging political systems in Europe and America, there is also the emergence of American conservatism which has no equal in European politics. In Europe, the right is associated with fascism. In America conservatism may be considered to the right of center but it is not fascism. After September 11th, American liberalism with its global multi-cultural borderless politics became antithetical to democracy.

Modern European politics have been shaped by the Americans. Militarily, we defeated fascism and, under the Marshall Plan, we contained Communism and rebuilt Europe into a peaceful liberal democratic continent with open markets. But, as the old adage warns, "No good deed goes unpunished." The peace Europe enjoys is the gift and sacrifice from a very young democratic nation. Europe lives under the weight of thousands of years of hegemonic history and, while it no longer has that power, it still considers America an unworthy hegemon.

Germany's left wing ideology is, indeed, very dark. It is totalitarian, anti-American , Anti-Israeli and pro-Islam. Italy, home of the Renaissance, Galileo, the wealth of Europe, the Mafia, the Venetians (fortress of the West against the Ottomans) is a lover of Marxism, fascism and Islam It also has the home of the Vatican which has had an ongoing love affair with the Nazis, andIslamics and, in particular with Saddam Hussein and Mummar Quadafy. It does not, however, have a political brain. France collaborates with anything bipedal including the Nazis, the Marxists and the Islamics, Algeria not withstanding. It seems to have a national antipathy towards Disneyland and big Macs, which, of course, gives it the moral high ground in world affairs.
