I think you're both (slightly) wrong here...

Reader comment on item: How Israel Can Win
in response to reader comment: How will we retain or Jewish and Democratic state?

Ze'ev, I don't think Dr. Pipes is speaking of a military defeat of the Palestinians -- he's suggesting (at least from what I've read) that they need to be defeated in terms of morale -- that means you'd have to apply to them psy-ops (psychological warfare techniques), not military techniques. (The Pal Arabs have been defeated by the IDF over and over again, yet they retain the desire to destroy Israel -- they're like psychopaths who are incapable of learning from punishment...physical punishment has zero effect...so you have to try the psychological realm.)

Sevile, you write: "The arena is not Israel." But, Dr. Pipes states that "Israel needs only to defeat the Palestinian Arabs, not the whole Arab or Muslim population." Thus, I think the focus really is on what Israel needs to do with respect to Palestinian Arabs (not bother with the rest of the Arab or Muslim world.) So, in this sense, the arena is Israel...(although, of course, the rest of the world will probably not agree -- the UN, EU and other players will constantly meddle.)

Another contentious issue, btw -- one which I'm still stuck at -- is what will the end state look like? I just cannot see a viable, functional Pal state -- my solution would be to get rid of Gaza -- give the inhabitants the choice of moving either to Egypt or Jordan or whereever, some other Arab state -- give Gaza to Israel -- then a comparable section of territory could be taken from Jordan (along its border) and given to make a Pal state...
