How will we retain or Jewish and Democratic state?

Reader comment on item: How Israel Can Win

Submitted by Zeev Raphael (Israel), Apr 8, 2006 at 01:43

I am trying to understand the logic. Mr Pipes writes:

* Israel should be urged to convince the Palestinian Arabs that they have lost, to influence their psychology.
* An aggressive step like "transferring" Palestinian Arabs out of the West Bank would be counterproductive for Israel, prompting greater outrage, increasing the number of enemies, and perpetuating the conflict.

I understand that the "convincing" should be done by military means. Assuming that to be accomplished, what then? With the Palestinian Arabs remaining ("transferring" Palestinian Arabs out of the West Bank would be counterproductive for Israel!) - then what will we have gained? Does Pipes recommend abandoning our Democracy? Or the idea of a Jewish state with a Jewish majority?

I wonder what Mr Pipes' answer might be.

Daniel Pipes replies:

I am advocating steps that will lead Palestinians to conclude that Israel is permanent and they cannot eliminate it. I don't see transfer as achieving this goal - in addition to its other considerable drawbacks, both moral and political.
