Israel must stop granting sanctuary to those who produce the killers

Reader comment on item: How Israel Can Win

A war can be fought to stalemate, but it cannot be won by stopping or killing only the front line troops.

A suicide bomber is a weapon just as a guided missile is a weapon.

Attacking the factories and the workers who produce guided missiles is a legitimate war tactic. In exactly the same sense, attacking a mosque or school which produces suicide bombers along with the "clergy" and "teachers" is a legitimate war tactic.

Similarly, someone who provides pensions or bounties to the families of suicide bombers is equally a weapons producer, be he a Saudi who gives to "charity" or a UN bureaucrat who provides funds to the Palestinian Authority.

Israel must, of course, temper its actions in deference to world opinion during normal times, but it should clearly let it be known to weapons producers that it may well strike at the sources in extraordinary times. Saudi Princes, to take one example, finance terror out of the belief that they are personally untouchable. Support for terror might dry up if they came to know that they would be personally held responsible for attacks by the folks they finance.
