"Greatest Generation" vs this new oneReader comment on item: My Gloom: Back to September 10 Submitted by Margie Bieber (United States), Dec 21, 2005 at 12:00 I remember hearing from my parents talk about how they sacrificed for 'the war effort' and how they did things like metal drives and couldn't get meat but once a week. Everything was put on hold until the war ended. Very partriotic and part of what made them the "greatest generation" in history. Then, along comes 9/11. The President of the United States tells us to "go about our business" that the best thing we can do is to "live as we have always lived" and I feel cheated. Even the things that I want to do: I can't. I want to be viligant. I want to help the government fight this Islamic terrorism, but how? If I do anything, I am committing an act of racism, which is now a hate crime. Sometimes even the raising of a voice in the wilderness gets people arrested who haven't done anything but voice their concerns. When Arabic language debris was found along the border, many voices were heard saying what Tom Tancredo had been saying for decades but he is also libeled "racist" for insisting on border security. Even our President says that he must make a "guest worker program" that is tantamount to amnesty. I would be willing to bet that the trial of Sam al Arian had severe instructions to the jury. They had to concern themselves ONLY with some facts and not others. Even if a Bible is in their rooms, they may not look to it for answers or their verdict will be thrown out. Maybe the "greatest generation" could be great, but I don't think ours can with it's hands tied behind our backs!
