take heart - all this was predictable

An excellent article. But one must put it in perspective.

The Islamists got on the scoreboard early with a few trifling attacks, and then they scored relatively big on 9/11.

In return a quite moderate and deliberate President Bush has overturned two Muslim regimes, utterly devastated the Sunni area of Iraq from whence Saddam hatched; and in the process we've killed at least ten times the number of Muslims as the number of ours who the Islamists killed in New York.

Meanwhile the Russians and the Chinese are free to abuse the Muslims within their reach without even a hint of caring by the vast mass of Westerners.

Perhaps more importantly, all across the world non-Muslims now know precisely where they stand and untold number of small, private, unheralded decisions are no doubt making it more and more difficult for Muslims to emigrate to and/or work in the modern Western economies and study in the modern Western educational systems.

After the next attack the Western response will be greater, and after the one following that it will be greater still; and eventually the Islamists will provoke a truly violent tribal response if they happen to pull off a really flashy stunt. Unless, of course, the vast mass of Muslims wake up an leash their own dogs rather than continue to suffer on their behalf.

In the meantime, of course, it doesn't seem wise to hold real estate or live in the iconic target areas, but then densely populated inner cities have been obsolescent since the invention of nuclear weapons in any event.
