My Gloom

Reader comment on item: My Gloom: Back to September 10

You are not alone. It is my gloom, too. As long as this administration tells the public to "go on with your lives"...we are sunk.

At WW II we were immediately a changed nation of belt tightening, victory gardens, cut back on gasoline, making cars, furniture, clothing, nylon stockings, shoes, eating out..though eggs and fried potato, tea and coffee was a pretty good meal then. As an early teen even I was put to work as a riviter, then as a supplier. We were moved here and there by the employment office. There were peacenicks railing, but the media refused to allow such movies or print in papers. Most of it came from the East. FDR, I think, was able to put forth only that which would give comfort to the people of the 48, and not to our enemies. Our schools had not been taken over by the corporate United States then, as now. We all pitched in protecting our streets, homes and businesses, and signed up for night watch in the hills in San Francisco. I do not recall anyone saying or talking about fear for themselves. We all cared about each other and gave some of our salaries to the war effort every week. We just did.

Now, this nation is a rip off from sea to shining sea. The best thing Bush could have done was to cut back on all the fluff, tighten our belts and change the way we live for the time we need to bring our boys home in victory. This nation is broken asunder. Our leaders are corrupt, sell or give away our secrets, our senators and congressmen are treasonous and consider themselves above reproach...not all, but moving in that direction. Look what clinton gave to china and now china owns us. We are a nation of junk.
