Reader comment on item: Musharraf's Historic Speech

Submitted by Naim (United States), Sep 26, 2005 at 13:44

Dear Dr. Pipes:

As someone who was born in Pakistan, I agree with you that there is widespread anti-semitism in the Muslim world. Fortunately, my father taught me to respect all religions and cultures. He actually admired the Israelis for the kind of country they created out of the desert. So I did not form the negative opinions that many Muslims have of the Jews and Israel. I am also quite proud to say that I received my law degree from Yeshiva University.

While I have my problems with Pres. Musharraf (i.e., his recent unfortunate comments about rape and his not doing enough to curb the religious elements in Pakistan) I agree with you that he has taken a historic step. You are also quite right that his referring to the Holocaust as the Jewish people's "greatest tragedy" is very important. Not too many Muslim leaders have done that. I just hope that he follows through with some action. As for King Abdullah II, all I can say is, God save the King.
