Trust, but verify

Reader comment on item: Musharraf's Historic Speech

Submitted by Sunil Erraballi (United States), Sep 20, 2005 at 14:11

Dear Mr. Pipes:

Thanks for your newsletters and periodic updates.

Your recent article caught my eye. Tread carefully when it comes to Mr. Musharraf - like former president Reagan used to say "Trust, but verify"! Musharraf is a congenital liar, a recent example is his denial about his comments that women in Pakistan invite a rape to get a visa to go overseas and make millions! See:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/09/18/AR2005091800554.html

His recent love for the Jewish diaspora has an ulterior motive, he wants to reduce the India-Israel bonhomie at minimal cost to him and Pakistan. Next time you see him at AJC, ask him about the status of minorities and women in Pakistan. See how he reacts when you ask him a real question. Read Nick Kristof's column in todays New York Times, OPINION
Lining Up to Be Raped? September 20, 2005

President Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan visited the U.S. last week and fretted that Pakistani women were being raped to make money.

Having said that, it was indeed a very positive and symbolic step that Musharraf took by reaching out to the Jewish community.

Best wishes.
