Reader comment on item: Musharraf's Historic Speech

Submitted by Swahili Dinaz (India), Oct 11, 2005 at 01:36

Pakistani government has rejected the offer of the Indian Army to provide assistance to PoK villages that are closer to India than distant Islamabad, even as a joint effort with the Pakistan army, thus in effect adding to the misery of Kashmiri survivors in Pakistan, and perhaps, contributing to a bigger death toll! Terrorists are trying their best to terrorise Indian Kashmiris against accepting humanitarian relief from the army! No doubt they themselves have enough stocks of dry fruits to last them throughout the approaching winter, as largesse from Islamabad.

Interesting first reports from international observers that the Indian Kashmiri populace affected by the earthquake is praising emergency help from the disciplined Indian army!

If Kashmir was supposed to be an Islamist cause, what prevented Musharraf from camping out in Muzaffarabad, capital of Pakistan Occupied Kashmir to expedite aid, instead of first focusing all assistance on one collapsed building in Islamabad? And if Pakistan is a nuclear nation permanently at war with its neighbor, it is surprising that it doesn't have enough helicopters and cargo planes, unless those are all stacked with nuclear arsenal concealed in the Himalayan forests and hence not currently available for emergency aid?

Amid reports of a Saudi air bridge to Pakistan beginning 9 October and massive aid from the Arabian Gulf Countries, to the tune of hundreds of million dollars, in addition to resumption of assistance from Islamic charities previously cut off on account of the War against Terrorism, it would be interesting to see where this aid is utilised in the end. --Going by the level of infrastructure and development in PoK after more than one decade of making Kashmir a prime Islamist cause, as compared to the Dolce Vita lifestyles of the military in Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi -- it could be anyone's guess. Also, more fodder for the Islamist mills...

Here's some Islamic comic relief about US aid at a time when the Government of Pakistan has declared that it is unable to cope. The homeless of NWFP and PoK would even have welcomed peanuts, naturally, but are left to die of starvation and the cold!
