"No one, for instance, had begged Graham Staines to ‘please come and save us through Christ'. He went to India, flushed with funds, of his own volition at the behest of his employers – the Church, and provided sufficient provocation to indigenous culture for the latter to forget its tradition of amiable peacefulness and bonhomie for a while"

This statement above says it all.. . Missionaries go where the need is. Graham Stains went to India to care for the lepers & discarded, as he saw it as an act of charity - the same as Mother Teresa cared for the discarded, poor and dying in Kolkata. One does not have to be invited to do work among the poor and unwanted, these are acts of charity, its one's goodness of the heart that motivates very special people. No ordinary person takes great pleasure in caring for the discarded lepers, especially in India. It takes a person of great compassion and charity to work among the lepers...

What the "keen student of Islam" is unaware of is that Christianity is a missionary religion, where it is incumbent of them to preach the words of Christ and his love for all humanity. They dont go doing any harm, burning temples or killing non-believers; wherever they go they spread love and compassion and do good deeds. Is that a provocation?

These are acts of great Charity done by caring people of any religion. To make a statement like the one made by " the student of Islam" is adding insult to injury. Is it provocation to preach love, compassion & care for the discarded? Is it O.K. to burn alive missionaries who do nothing but good to the poor and unwanted? If there was no need; Mr. Stains would not have been there. He was there to fulfill a need; that was amply shown when his widow and daughter visited India the accolades and the welcome given especially by the poor who were cared for by the Staines.

...You are making excuses for the excesses of the Hindu extremists; why dont you admit that there is a problem in India in dealing with the Hindu extremists. What the"keen student" should realize is that Hindus in the West too proselytize as they have open houses in their temples in the Europe and America where they distribute Hindu literature, offer classes in meditaion and offer vegan meals etc. But no one here is calling for the burring of Hindus for that or calling anyone to murder or pillage the Hindu temples and Hindus living in the West.
