A Small, but Crucial Step

Reader comment on item: Musharraf's Historic Speech

Submitted by Shazia Khanum (Canada), Sep 20, 2005 at 08:57

Despite the fact that there are those who are demonizing Islam (Muslims -- al-Qaeda/Islamist types -- and non-Muslims alike), there is a growing number of Muslims who are taking some very positive steps, many of them through a re-interpretation of the original texts.

And despite Musharraf's human weaknesses and errors, he has contributed quite positively since the evil acts of 911, and is therefore, one of those Muslims. This recent step he has taken with respect to a reconciliation with our Jewish brethren is a historic one, especially when it is examined in light of what he faces in his own country in the form of religious extremism, fanaticism and intolerance. I applaud his efforts realizing fully that this is just a small step.

It is quite a challenge for a Muslim to take any steps that are moderate and conciliatory in light of the fact that our faith is being demonized, our sincerity and intentions doubted and we are stereotyped and painted with the same color as the Islamists and radicals are painted. But despite these challenges, we must express and act in moderation and take many more steps towards mutual respect, tolerance, co-existence, interactions, building of bridges, forgiveness, etc. As a humanity, we have no choice but to take this path.
