Image Restoration Begins in Their Own Backyard

Reader comment on item: [Fixing] Islam's Image Problem

Submitted by M Leckey (United States), Aug 14, 2003 at 12:58

The responsibility to change non-Islamist's views of Islam rests upon the Muslims themselves. We hear some renounce terror and to say that hatred and violence is not a cornerstone of their beliefs, but we do not see this.

Rather than for Muslim organizations to spend all of their energies on defamation lawsuits, their resources must be spent on visibly reaching out around the world to those who have made hatred, violence, and murder the basis of Islam.

A positive image in every facet of society never comes for free and even Islam should not expect it to be so. All I hear are words. Actions speak louder than words and until those actions involve something other than a crowded bus in Israel or an embassy in Africa exploding, the image of Islam will forever be darkened.

It is within us all to love and to understand those of all faiths. I pray to my God that it is within the Muslim faith as well.
