Moderate Islam?

What exactly is a moderate Muslim? Considering the basic precepts of the faith, is such an individual even possible? ... Sometimes an ideology, whether religious or secular, puts it outside the boundary of civilized discourse. I'm afraid many Americans are starting to sense that Islam might just fit in that category. The facts are that many of us feel under assault by people who profess this faith and there's no explaining that fact away.
