Reader comment on item: [Fixing] Islam's Image Problem

Submitted by Pat Kunz (United States), Jul 31, 2003 at 15:07

Fenix, you are comparing apples and oranges. I checked several of the verses you listed. Many in the Old Testament are referring to events that took place over five thousand years ago. They are describing events, not indicating how you should live your life today. In the New Testament, one (Luke) is a parable that talks about how man is given gifts and is expected to make use of them. The event never took place. Another (John) says whoever believes in the Son has eternal life. Whoever does not will remain under God's punishment. It does not call for violence against non-believers. There is nothing violent in the passage you cited from Corinthians. All it says is that we must appear before Christ to be judged on how we live our lives.

I could go on, but I think you get the picture. Christianity is not the only religion with a violent past, but Islam is the only major religion that sanctions violence TODAY. Individual Christians may be violent, but the Church in no way condones their acts and the state prosecutes their crimes. Unfortunately, that is not the case with militant Islam. Unless and until moderate Muslims speak out and condemn these acts of hatred and crimes of violence against innocent people, I can only assume that they support them.
