Over forty years ago, while serving in Turkey--surely the most enlightened of Islamic nations-- my Turkish military counterpart told me "mark my words, the sword of Islam will swing again."

He was in his cups, but I've always remembered the incident. My two and one half years in Tuirkey prepared me to be not at all surprised by the events of the last several years.
