Reader comment on item: [Fixing] Islam's Image Problem

Submitted by Richard Nicely (United States), Jul 30, 2003 at 08:43

This is a common theme for most minority groups, that will continue to be disadvantaged as long as radical factions are the only ones speaking for them.

The NAACP and Rainbow Push are other great examples, of organizations run by and for extreme racists. Yet our government and other American institutions universally accept them as speaking for "people of color". Bush not bowing down and going to the NAACP convention, but choosing to attend the much more moderate and reasonable Urban League convention is a step in the right direction. However, instead of making excuses about scheduling, Bush should have the fortitude to denounce the NAACP as a radical racist organization, and continue to meet with black leaders who are truly interested in the well being of blacks. Likewise, Bush needs be much more careful about which Arabs and Muslim with whom he associates.
