When the early Christians, inspired by the revolutionary semitic ideas finally gained the upper hand in the Roman Empire they set about destroying the remaining vestiges of the ancient world. They abolished the priestly cast that oversaw the irrigation system and apportioned the food produced to the populace.this was done by the edict of Theodesius, end of 4th century.Paganism was outlawed, academies were closed, end of free thinking. Then attention was turned to material relics of the ancient world.

In Rome only the Capitol was left standing, other temples were left to ruin In the provinces buildings were actively demolished. In Syria Marcullus a bishop, oversaw the demolition of the temple of Jupiter.Archibishop Theophilus of Alexandria with the help of a Christian mob demolished the temple of Serapis with the adjacent library, books were burned ,clay idols were broken, gold and silver ones stolen.Irefer the reader to The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire chapter 28 by E Gibbon

After these events the Egyptians forgot how to read their hieroglyphs, talk about discontinuity. I went to Egypt sometime ago and saw disfigured statues and whole swathes of hieroglyphs destroyed, with my own eyes, and was told this was done by the early Christians.

What if pagan philosophy was allowed to flourish in the Roman Empire, the world would have benefited immensly, maybe people would have been less bigotted.
