Reader comment on item: Ban the Burqa - and the Niqab Too

Submitted by Rebecca Moulds (Egypt), Aug 5, 2007 at 09:19

I have just returned from a trip to Israel, back to Cairo, where I am now on vacation and had lived for several years. The first thing that struck me upon entering Israel was the lack of burqa, niqab and hijab, although a large majority of the Arab women I saw there in the Arab parts of Israel wore some type of head covering, allowing their faces to be seen.

But here in Egypt, the burqa is alive and well, so are the niqab and hijab, and one gets used to seeing it in Middle Eastern and Asian countries, but not in the West.

I agree with Dr. Pipes that something has to be done to stop this total covering-up of the face and body in Western soceities. It is a very sad thing that a person's cultural identity is being used for bank robberies, murders, and terrorism in general, but something has to be done to stop all the senseless slaughter that hides behind this very cowardly disguise.
