John,

I have to point out that it isn't strictly true to say that this this quotation is from 'The River Wars'. That is to say, Churchill edited out of his book following the first edition, more than 100 years ago. I believe the reasons Churchill did this are pertinent, and that Churchill's "intestinal fortitude" was of a rather different ordere than you assume. I respectfully refer you to the following:
