Hilter was right wing

Reader comment on item: The Paterson 'Protocols'
in response to reader comment: Hitler was not right or left, he was of another dimension

Thank you for your reply Jonathan. I still maintain Hitler was right wing because his ideas are rooted in the belief that humans are unequal. Specifically racially, but also in terms of gender and, to a lesser extent, class. Hitler's ideology is repellant but much of it was around before World War 1 among far right groups like the Pan-German League. Conquest of the East, Anti-Semitism, Social Darwinism, Eugenics, a new moral Puritanism, often rooted in agrarian values...all around before the Nazis were formed, all right-wing ideas.

Both right and left are broad spectrums. Both incorporate anti-government wings, anarchism on the left, libertarianism on the right. Both right wingers and left wingers have also advocated strong government action at some point in history - Mussolini and Hitler on the right, the Soviet Union and Maoist China on the left. I believe the key division is the acceptance of the ideals of the European Enlightenment, positive for the left, rejection on the right. Even here it is not always clear cut as the right have embraced free-market economics. A key Enlightenment idea and one initally rejected by conservatives.
