Question about the validity of "Protocols"

I have for a few years now seen reference to the "Protocols" both pro and con and have been witness to the back and forth over their authenticity. No one ever seems willing to explain why they believe the "Protocols" are real or a forgery. Would someone please explain why they are a forgery (or real) and what evidence there is to support that notion.
