Henry J, you are making a historical mistake. When the political and economical establishment in Germany handed power to Hitler they had exactly your thoughts. They thought that when Hitler is given power he would turn out to be a radical conservative no more. The idea was that he would protect the establishment from the communists. In fact he didn't. He only made use of the established power structures in state and society to abolish them and set up his own by various organizations of which the SS is the most prominent.

The most important manifestation of this is the principle of "Gleichschaltung": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gleichschaltung

which I would translate into "total alignment". The means to transform society are almost identical to what communists did and what Islamists imagine.
