"Hamas' ability to launch rockets appears to have been diminished for the moment. But can that ability be destroyed or nearly destroyed? Probably not. "

The bitterly farcical aspects of this conflict rule. Israel is a smart, strong, good-looking state that nevertheless can't protect 1 million of its citizens from rocket attacks launched by yahoos from tunnels and people's backyards.

IDF troops are reporting that the Hamas "troops" are country boys who don't know enough to aim their guns before they shoot. And considering that these troops aren't being located in any great numbers, it occurs to me that they may not even exist!! But then Hamas doesn't really need armed troops, since it has millions of human shields to protect its rocket launchers.

So what's really going on? Hamas terrorists have two known assets in addition to the human shields: the Iranians and the smuggling tunnels. And since Israel abandoned security control of Gaza, the terrorists have been free to use both to transform Gaza into a huge rocket launching field.

All Israel needs to do to shut down the rocketeers is establish security control of Gaza. And that is the only action that will shut them down. The alternative is that millions of Israelis will face an ongoing terror threat, and I think they deserve better than that.
