Israel's mistake, pipes greater mistake

Reader comment on item: Israel's Strategic Incompetence in Gaza

Submitted by yuval Brandstetter MD (Israel), Jan 13, 2009 at 01:12

Israel's mistake is the artificial distinction it makes between HAMAS and the Arab population. HAMAS is the duly elected representative of the Arabs who had invaded the Land of Israel, it is but a new name for an old policy, JIHAD. the distinction empowers HAMAS and weakens Israel, giving the invaders a leg up on the indigent Jews. HAMAS does not make the same mistake. It denied the jewish right to have a State at all, and the idea of Jewish sovereignty, advocating a repeat of the Hussayni inspired holocaust in Europe.

Pipes advocates a clear victory, but over who? HAMAS, FATAH, Islamic Jihad? but not the invaders. That is illogical. He recognizes the right of the invader to supplant the Jewish State by legitimizing the invasion. Egypt is using her HAMAS cohorts to invade via the Gaza strip, and Jordan left her citizens in Israel after losing the war of invasion begun in 1948, as a fifth column. What Dr Pipes proposes is a victory over nothing followed by a further invasion of enemy states who will re-instate the merry days of pre 1967 where Israel was 15 miles wide, and open to attacks from all sides at a moments notice. Pipes suggestion is the death-knell of the Jewish State. Good intentions lead to hell, or alternatively, the Ovens proposed by a Fort lauderdale resident.

Daniel Pipes replies:

For the life of me, I have no idea what my alleged mistake is. I advocate that Israel defeat all those enemies who wish to eliminate it, whether jihadists, communists, Palestinian nationalists, pan-Arabists, pan-Syrianists, or yet others. What is there to be confused by in this formulation?
