Dear Sara,

When the French wish to ban Muslim head coverings in classrooms, is it because they are afraid that some Muslim student will steal anonymously from the teacher?

I would not be against a bank, or an airline requiring, during the security check-in, that anything which prevented the identification of the customer be removed temporarily, with respect for the modesty of the wearer.

What I am against is a kulturkampf waged against any group; and unnecessary restrictions on anyone's freedom in the name of security, religion, modesty or whatever. That way leads to the kind of repressive society that, I assume, we are both abhor.
