Fact (1)Reader comment on item: Hold Damascus Responsible Submitted by Infidel (Canada), Aug 9, 2006 at 02:25 Mr. Tonon: What is your obsession with May 14, 1948, the day that the United Nations declared Israel a Nation? Are you not able to comprehend that there was a history regarding the Jews and the land established as Israel? In a previous post I explained that the Jews had inhabited Israel for almost 3200 years before the declaration of May 14, 1948. Why is that not relevant? And why is it not relevant that on November 2, 1917, James Balfour issued the Balfour letter on behalf of the League of Nations, declaring the League's intention of establishing a homeland for the Jews on land they had occupied for 3200 years? At the time of this declaration, Israel was a desolate unpopulated land with a small number of Jews and a smaller number of Arabs and Bedouin tribes. Is it not relevant that the League of Nations intended Gaza, the West Bank, Israel and the land now know as Jordan to be the homeland for the Jews? Today, Israel contains less that 1/10 of the land originally intended for the Jewish homeland thanks to England's failure to carry out the mandate as directed by the League of Nations. Please note: Fact (1) is not the beginning of the history of the world, nor the beginning of a homeland for the Jews, nor the beginning of the contention between Muslims and Jews. Fact (1) is nothing more than an opportunity for you to demonstrate your angst for Israel. You should present Fact (1) to the Muslims where you will find considerable agreement and an appreciation for your limited knowledge of history. I surely hope that this is the last we will hear about Fact (1). Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
