Strike Syria before 20th of August

Reader comment on item: Hold Damascus Responsible [for Hezbollah Violence in Southern Lebanon]
in response to reader comment: international force [in Lebanon],

It makes sense to strike Syria hard for providing arms, money and moral support to Hezbollah.

As long as Syria and Iran are not committed to stop Hezbollah there will be mayhem in the Middle East and the world. The United Nations have given an ultimatum to Iran to stop nuclear activities by end of August; the Iranians care a damn for the ultimatum.

In such a scenario the United Nations will either impose economic sanctions and may permit the use of force, though this will take some time. In my opinion there is no point in imposing an economic embargo on Iran, as we have seen in case of Iraq that oil had been smuggled when the sanctions were on; and economic sanctions will make the Iranians more hostile towards the international community and the Iranians will speed up their nuclear program, with the help of the North Koreans, to develop WMD's. So, economic sanctions cannot stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons neither can negotiations, we have also seen how the Iranians have played their cards with the Europeans during the negotiations; basically it was a delaying tactic. Only military action can stop Iran from developing WMD's.

A direct military action against Iran after the end UN ultimatum (30th Aug) will draw a harsh reaction from the international community. Iran had already declared that an attack on Syria is an attack on the Islamic world and an attack on Iran. So if Israel attacks Syria, Iran will come to rescue Syria then the U.S, EU and Turkey can come to Israel's help. The United Nations can pass a resolution to disarm Iran militarily, with the combined threat of Syria and Iran looming large on Israel. If the resolution is vetoed by Russia and China the U.S, EU and their partners in the Middle East and central Asia can form an alliance and take military actions against Iran.

If Israel declares war on Syria before 20th of August it gives time to Israel to destroy Syrian military and its command and control. The weaker military coalition of Syria and Iran will become easier to deal with.
