Reader comment on item: Hold Damascus Responsible
in response to reader comment: A few basic points and a suggestion

Submitted by Tom Tonon (United States), Aug 7, 2006 at 20:23

I'm disappointed - but not discouraged - that no one has yet commented on my suggestion that if Fact (1) of my previous post were acknowledged by Israel and the US in a Peace Package at the negotiating table, the Palestinians would see it as an alternative to violence. This is a suggestion that strikes at the heart of the Israeli/Palestinian issue, and much further in the ME, and would immediately improve communications between the parties, starting a new kind of dialogue that could lead to real peace.

Such an acknowledgement wouldn't be telling the Palestinians anything they don't already know, by the way. It's no secret that Fact (1) is a Fact. On the other hand, not acknowledging this basic fact, which the Palestinians already know, simple enrages them to violence. Their mouths have been taped shut, not being able to discuss it with their Israeli brethren, so they do violence with their hands. And as we all know, Violence Begets Violence.

I'd appreciate very much hearing from posters here how such a delicate, precious kernal of truth can be nurtured to grow. How can this idea be made to work? What would be the next step? What are the pitfalls to avoid? ...etc.?

Best regards,
Tom
