It's 2006.. not 1982

I would accept your suggestion that punishing Syria with direct military reprisal for attacks launched by Hizbolla is worth a try but only after the U.S. and other European forces have had a chance to confront Hizbolla and rearrange the political landscape in Lebanon.

I don't doubt for a minute that there is regret in American and European capitals that confrontation was avoided in 1982 by running away and opening the world to greater problems (Iran, Iraq, 9/11, etc) which we are still dealing with. I believe, if given the opportunity, these forces would be welcomed by Lebanese and Lebanon might in fact turn out to be the democratic poster child that President Bush was hoping to find in Iraq.
