in response to reader comment: Sounds like Vietnam

It sounds eerily like Vietnam -- and Afghanistan '79.

Obama has it in his head that ISIS can't be surrounded and controlled. After reading this I checked out the size of both all of Syria and all of Iraq and found that both of these entire countries easily fit into my state - with plenty of room to spare. Note, that's not just the parts that ISIS control (under duress in many cases).

I know that if France, Russia and the US (and possibly the RAAF for good measure! ) started bombing basically unarmed cities (not counting rifles) and towns here, backed up by a few battalions of Peshmega on the ground, - a surrender would be achievable in a short time.

How long a war do the Russians want? Five years? Ten? Twenty?

I'd say 3 months. The Russians will be brutal but thorough. Long range high altiude bombing by Tupolevs and continual sorties by 20 or so SU25's are already grinding them down. BTW, the Russian air force already managed to destroy 500 fuel tankers selling oil illegally out of northern Syria - why has the US NOT done that in the last year - despite having better sattelite intel than even Russia has?? That to me is a BIG question that needs a satsfactory answer. Oil sales have bankrolled ISIS over the last year of their murderous expansion - yet their source of revenue could have been wiped out in the first weeks. Nothing was done. Why? On the face of it - that stinks.

ISIS can provide it.

Not for long. If any of them have an IQ with 3 digits, they'll realise all the 'allah akbars' in the world are useless against the onslaught. Much the same as flowers and candles are useless against terrorist bullets and bombs. I'd say there will be mass defections.

You can't fight Allah with rockets, and win.

No, and shouting 'allah akbar' to the sky is not going to magically stop bombs falling from it.

ISIS has tremendous popular appeal, especially among the young.

Yes, there could be more lone wolf attacks - while ISIS is being decimated. Some more Paris style tragedies - but this will only infuriate people around the world who have had a gutfull of islam and its results. What's on the cards is someone losing it and doing a Breivik on bunches of muslims. Or an Isis/muslim initiated bio attack.
