Reader comment on item: [The Issue of Compulsion in Religion:] Islam is What Its Followers Make of It
in response to reader comment: Islam V Hinduism

Firstly whilst your comment is i assume a direct reference to why many Hindu's worship Pictures/Idols of God. If as your quote says it cannot protect itself.

Well this is quite simple, Hinduism itself does not exist, the real name is Sanatana Dharma, that is what Lord Vishnu, Rama, Krishna and many other gods are part of. For whats its worth Sanatana Dharma (literally translated as - way of life) is not a religion, its a way of life.

To however answer the comment on Idol worship, the Sanatana Dharma is so complex and beautiful that it is impossible for a Human (at least in the 21st Century) to attempt to worship god without having something to focus on.

This is why Idols of Gods are created, it is designed to bring man closer to god in a way mankind can manage. Its worth noting that the Sanatana Dharma or as many call it Hinduism has not always Idol worshipped. We believe in the 4 Yuga (4 stages of the world). We are currently in the final stage the Kaliyuga. In the Satyayuga (the first stage), Idol worship does not exist as mans average life span is 100,000 years and at that point man is one with god and in many cases worships god (Vishnu/Kalki during the first 1000 years of the Satyayuga) face to face.

On the note of the Idol not being able to protect itself, this is kind of the point, if something is to relate to mankind it has to be built in a way mankind can relate to. If the Idol could defend themselves, you would go into shock. Can you imagine an idol of Lord Rama firing an arrow at you cause you did something. An example of something that is so devine and yet is idolless is the Atma (human soul). Man will never understand it. Do you see how hard trying to sincerly pray to god is.

An for Muslims who ridicule Idol worship, what the heck you doing going to Mecca to see the Kabba, its effectively an Idol. For one it cannot defend itself, if i was to "for arguments sack" nuke it, the Kabba would not all of a sudden move or do anything.

I for one whislt finding some aspect of Islam beautiful, such as the masjids and some traditions, find alot of islam is backwards and totally contradictory of everything that is claimed to be preached and written. How can a religion that claims to be peaceful kill so many people in the name of god. No man has the right to kill another, if Allah felt so strongly against other religions he would come to earth himself and kill everyone (but sadly he hasn't come).

On a slightly personal level, for anyone wondering whether i have the right to say anything about the Sanatana Dharma or Islam.

I am a praticing disciple of the Sanatana Dharma, and whilst i openly Idol worship, for me it goes beyond worshiping God, for me i embody the Dharma in everything i do. I pray before i get out of bed, i pray before eating or drinking anything, i pray before bed and pray before commencing any form of work (personal or business), i also observe 26 fasting days per year. These are not just days of no food between certain times, they are no food or drink from when i wake up to when i go to bed (and for your info, i wake up about 6am and go to bed about 10pm).

For anyone wondering why i believe in the way of Sanatana Dharma yet Idol worship, this is simple. For me god is so great and powerful that i could never in my right mind imagine his eternal glory and so i use idol worshipping to bridge the very gap my human nature has created.

With regards to Islam, a number of my closest friends are muslim, and i have had the pleasure of attending talks on islam and even read extracts of the Qur'an. So i am not entirely without any islamic knowledge.
