Saying the Buddha was a Hindu is false propaganda spread by many Hindus to get the the credit of Buddhism to Hinduism. The Buddha's teaching pretty much contradicts Hinduism. The Buddha rejected the vedas and upto this day the Buddha is known as a corruptor of the vedas according to some puranas.
Hinduism didnt exist as a religion back in the days when Buddha lived as we know it today. Back then it was Vedism. Hinduism is a religion which later developed from Vedism during the middle ages. Hinduism is a mixture of vedism and puranic polytheism.
Buddhists are Buddhists not Hindu. Get that straight. Buddhism contradicts Hinduism in many ways. Just to give you one point in Hinduism you chose to follow the left hand path or the right hand path (i.e. either self-gratification or self-mortification) but Buddhism rejects both those extremes and tells its followers to follow the middle path. Hinduism is a theistic faith where certain Hindu cults practice monotheism others practice polytheism. The Buddhist creed is not based on revelations or any sort of theistic background. There are many many differences than similarities.
